He examines the outward forms of credit transactions, the legal instruments employed, the kind of real property customarily used to guarantee debts, and the e parties engaged in these transactions. Security is the external line between land, which was the basic form of wealth in the Greek economy, and credit. Horoi-engraved stones serving to make public the fact that a particular piece of property was legally encumbered-were the devices the Athenians used as legal security. Finley offers a detailed analysis of 182 horos inscriptions to support his interpretation of the social, economic, and juristic facets of security obligations. The texts of these horoi are reprinted in full and their contents are summarized in four summa statistical tables. In his introductory essay, Paul Millett reexamines some of the conclusions reached by Finley in light of the substantial number of horoi that were found too late to be included in his analysis.
